It was first described in 1819 and is among the smallest known Neotropical Parrots. There are only sporadic sightings in the wild, few birds that are kept in captivity and a handful of museum specimens. To save the declining population In order to save the declining population, an international group was established. It brought together Aviculturists who owned the last remaining bird as well as officials from the government. The group formed a collaboration with the world-renowned non-profit organisation Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) of Qatar to develop a comprehensive program to reintroduce captive-bred Spix's Macaws to their natural habitat in the northeast of Brazil. AWWP has bought and is recovering 2,380 hectares of prime habitat in Caatinga, near Curaca, Brazil. AWWP also breeds and raises birds that will be released into the wild. This will provide the genetically pure source of animals for future generations. Spix's Macaws are typically found in trees and seldom seen on the ground. They usually nest in hollows or tree holes and forage for fruit seeds, nuts, seeds and other plants. They may spend up to one third of their day in the nest.
