The Premier League has seen many footballers best known for their silky skills, but plenty of others are notorious for different reasons.
This week, we are counting down the top 50 Premier League bad boys.
Several criteria to lay out first: football-related misdeeds rather than outright criminality is prioritised; individual moments of badness are relevant, but more weight is given to career-long infamy; this is not a list of top 50 hard men, but being tasty in the tackle earns points.

Also, this is an objective list compiled by the author, so you will almost certainly disagree with the entirety.
With that out the way, here is part four, counting down numbers 20 to 11…

20.

Robbie Savage
In 2008, this website declared Savage the dirtiest player in Premier League history, as at the time he had the most yellow cards ever in the competition. While that record has since been surpassed, Savage's bad boy reputation persists.
While he was surprisingly only sent off once in his Premier League career, Savage never endeared himself to fans of his opponents.
An early nadir came in the 1997-98 season when he dived to win a penalty against Derby, then ran off in celebration at the decision. It was somewhat surprising he finished his career with the Rams.
Robbie Savage confronts Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann while playing for Blackburn in 2006
RELATED ARTICLES

Share
3k shares

19. Ryan Shawcross
Shawcross may have wept when he saw the extent of Aaron Ramsey's broken leg after his fierce tackle on the Arsenal midfielder in 2010, but that wasn't enough to earn him forgiveness from the fans, nor was the tackle hugely out of character.
In Stoke's early Premier League days, Shawcross's physical playing style came to typify the team as much as Rory Delap's long throws.

So many bad boys are loved by their fans and hated those of other clubs, and Shawcross is no exception.
Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey sustained a broken leg after Ryan Shawcross's challenge in 2010
18.

El-Hadji Diouf
Arriving at Liverpool after impressing for Senegal at the 2002 World Cup, Diouf soon became much better known for spitting at players and opposition fans, and for his unlikable attitude on the pitch.
Although he would enjoy a long career in the Premier League - and a successful one when at Bolton Wanderers - Diouf is more remembered for incidents such as being accused of taunting injured QPR player Jamie Mackie, leading Neil Warnock to call Diouf ‘nasty' and ‘lower than a sewer rat'.
El-Hadji Diouf is restrained by a match official as he attempts to celebrate his equaliser for Bolton Wanderers in front of the Newcastle United fans at St James' Park in 2006
17.

Lee Cattermole
The average response to the statistic that Lee Cattermole has been sent off once every 16 Premier League games would be: ‘What? That rarely?' Cattermole has taken an early bath on seven occasions in the English top flight - the same number of times as Roy Keane.

Cattermole's style of play - which could euphemistically be described as ‘all action' - is typified by his display for Sunderland in the March 2012 Tyne-Wear derby.

He was booked in the first minute, then sent off after the final whistle for confronting the referee.
Sunderland's Lee Cattermole is given a red by referee Mike Dean after the 1-1 draw in the Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle United in March 2012
16.

Kieron Dyer
In 2004, Newcastle United manager Sir Bobby Robson asked Dyer to play on the right wing against Middlesbrough. Dyer said this was ‘unfair'. He came on, made a mistake which cost Newcastle the game and Robson was sacked soon afterwards.
Dyer, in his early Magpies career, was key to their successive top five finishes, but is now remembered for [https://pinfaves.com/jamie-park-weight-loss/ https://pinfaves.com/jamie-park-weight-loss/] the above truculence, his later career injuries, and an on-pitch fight with team mate Lee Bowyer.

Speaking of which…
Newcastle United manager Sir Bobby Robson gives tactical advice to Kieron Dyer shortly before bringing on the midfielder against Middlesbrough during a 2004 Premier League game
15.

Lee Bowyer
It was Bowyer who threw the first punch in the Dyer fight, enraged that his team mate would not pass the ball to him. It was just one incident in which controversy seemed to follow the midfielder around as if magnetised.
He collected five top flight red cards, and 98 yellow cards, at one stage the Premier League record.
Other incidents included a 1996 conviction for affray after throwing chairs across a McDonald's, and an apology in 2010 after swearing at an opposing fan and grandmother while playing for Birmingham.
Lee Bowyer and Dyer got involved in an infamous scrap in 2005 as the pair are pulled apart by Aston Villa's Gareth Barry (left) and Stephen Carr before being sent off in their side's 3-0 loss
14.

Richard Dunne
The Premier League record for red cards is currently a three-way tie, of players on eight sendings off. Irishman Dunne is one member of that triumvirate.
While he was never involved in any trouble off the pitch, Dunne's capacity for hurting his own team while on it - he also holds the Premier League record for most own goals - merits his high inclusion on this list.
Richard Dunne was sent off a record eight times in his Premier League career, including for Manchester City against Tottenham Hotspur in 2008 after bringing down Darren Bent
13.

Patrick Vieira
Vieira is another of the three men on eight Premier League career red cards. While one of the most talented footballers of his generation, Vieira's nasty streak is just as memorable.
At the start of the 2001-02 season he was sent off twice within 72 hours in consecutive league games, and around that time he was often critical of the club and its transfer policy.
He had a long running rivalry with Manchester United's Roy Keane, culminating in a bust-up in the tunnel in 2005.
Patrick Vieira is held back by Manchester United players after the Arsenal midfielder was sent off for a foul on Ruud van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford in 2003
12.

Diego Costa
The bad boy of the current Premier League era, Costa's tempestuous stay at Chelsea looks to be over after a text from Antonio Conte. It brings the curtain down on a spell memorable for good and bad reasons.
He was banned for two separate stamping incidents against Liverpool in 2015, then again later that year for slapping Laurent Koscielny, and soon after he threw a bib at manager Jose Mourinho while on the bench in a game at Tottenham - all this before numerous bust ups with Conte in the season just gone.

English football journalists will miss him.
Diego Costa appears to stamp on Martin Skrtel during a clash between Chelsea and Liverpool
11.

Mario Balotelli
It shows how many bad boys the Premier League has had in 25 years that Balotelli, however narrowly, misses out on the top 10. His periods at Manchester City and Liverpool were ended by fallings out with Roberto Mancini and Brendan Rodgers respectively.
His off-pitch activities included: visiting a women's prison to ‘have a look around'; telling the police, when stopped in his car and found with £5,000 cash, that he had the money ‘because I am rich'; throwing darts at a youth player; and setting off fireworks in his bathroom.

Why always him?
Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli celebrates scoring in a 6-1 win at Manchester United in 2011 by revealing an under-shirt that reads: 'Why always me?'
RELATED ARTICLES

Share
3k shares

adverts.addToArray({"pos":"inread_player"})Advertisement

Tough guy Gordon Ramsay reveals his dramatic collapse at the birth of his fifth child. I went white...

and then I fainted
The hard man of the kitchen admits there is just one thing he hasn't been able to handle lately - being there at the birth of his son. ‘I genuinely c*****d myself,' says Gordon Ramsay, tough-talking host of the fiery Kitchen Nightmares, who likes to run marathons and go in for extreme sports as well as being one of the world's leading chefs.

‘I've been giddy flying in a fighter jet at 1,000mph. I've done some very dangerous things underwater. But I've never, ever felt as vulnerable as I did when my son Oscar was born.'
The hard man of the kitchen Gordan Ramsay admits there is just one thing he hasn't been able to handle lately - being there at the birth of his son
So what happened?

‘Extraordinary. I'm sat there in the room worrying about menus and ingredients and all of a sudden this little head pops out the sunroof and you s*** yourself!'
He's talking with amazing candour and emotion about the delivery by caesarean section last month at the exclusive Portland Hospital in London, where Meghan Markle recently gave birth.

‘I thought I was going to faint. Ed Sheeran was playing and I just turned the volume up because I was like: "Holy mackerel, look what's going on here." They had to get the clamp on him because his shoulder got stuck. So it was scary.'
RELATED ARTICLES Share this article Share Oscar Ramsay was born weighing 7lb 9oz.

The chef held the baby for the first few moments of his life. ‘I've never experienced that before,' says Ramsay, who reveals that he was not at the birth of any of his previous four children. ‘Tana never wanted me to see her in that state. One time I went fly-fishing.' On that occasion, he was enjoying the peace of the six-acre lake at Syon Park, Middlesex.
Meanwhile, when twins Jack and Holly were born on Millennium Eve in 1999, Ramsay was working alone in the kitchen of his restaurant in Chelsea.

When Tana rang to say she was going into labour, he didn't believe her. She called back two hours later to say she was going into theatre for a caesarean section. ‘She still hasn't forgiven me for turning up half an hour late,' he said shortly after. ‘Personally, I'm quite relieved I did - if I'd seen it I'd have dropped to the floor!'
Event meets the celebrity chef to discuss Ramsay's new pan-Asian restaurant Lucky Cat, which opens in Mayfair this summer
So how was he at Oscar's birth?

‘I cried my f****** eyes out. All of a sudden you are nobody. You're standing there looking at a team of experts who are saying, "Right, we're going to look after you now Tana." And Tana's hand was squeezing my hand even tighter. She has thrombophilia [which increases the risks of blood clots], so a caesarean is a big operation. Everyone thinks it's easy but it's not.

They had to close up very quickly.'
Then big, tough Gordon Ramsay did what he was afraid of doing all those years ago. ‘I was white as a ghost. I fell back into the chair and I fainted. They said, "Tana's fine. I think it's you we need to look after next." It was just a moment of madness, being out of control.
I'm a control freak, always in control.'
What about Oscar? ‘I had to hand him back. I was like a sack of s*** on a hot day. And I'm looking in his eyes thinking, "Oh no dude, you're going to be p***** off with me when you hear about this!"' Ramsay is full of admiration for his wife.

‘What an amazing performance by Tana. I realised that men are weak and we've got it easy. I panicked. It's very rare I panic. Scary.'
This is a side to Ramsay that few of us ever see. He'll even reveal that his long-running public feud with Jamie Oliver is over, having made the first move at the start of the business troubles that saw Oliver's restaurants prepare to enter administration this week: ‘It was just appalling to see Jamie worry, so I reached out.'
Tana and Gordon Ramsay with new baby Oscar. ‘I've never experienced that before,' says Ramsay
We've met to discuss Ramsay's new pan-Asian restaurant Lucky Cat, which opens in Mayfair this summer.

But Oscar is only a month old, and the birth is still very much on his mind. It has opened him up to talk in a new way - and to say that there was a very moving reason why Tana decided he should be there this time.
‘We were devastated by the loss of Rocky three years ago,' he says, referring to Tana's late miscarriage, when she was rushed into hospital over one weekend in June 2016 and told that she had lost her son, Rocky, five months into the pregnancy.

Gordon and the children were with Tana at the time.
‘This - Oscar's birth - was a big homecoming for us, a big moment. I don't think you'll ever forget, in terms of healing. It didn't smooth anything over, just made it feel even closer because that time was awful.
I saw how hard-hitting it was then for the kids, to be there and to witness those little hands and feet, then to say goodbye. So this was full circle, I suppose.' His voice is uncharacteristically soft. ‘We've sort of brought closure to that. Now it's easier to talk about Rocky, where it wasn't beforehand.'
Is Ramsay a more hands-on father fifth time around?

‘I can change a nappy now in like 52 seconds. So yeah, way more hands-on than ever before. I just found it hard. Also, I wasn't there. Now I am.'
What's changed? ‘I've had to grow up! I've become a modern dad!' At the age of 52, despite an international business empire and a career as the potty-mouthed tyrant of the TV kitchen, Ramsay says he has mellowed and shifted his priorities.

‘I'm more content now, happier, relaxed where I am. I say "no" more than I say "yes". I've been so disciplined, empowering other people in my business.'
He seems far less tense than before. How do his older children feel about the change, which perhaps comes too late for them?

‘The kids know how hard I worked,' he says. ‘Meg is 21 next week. And that was the start of it - four months after she was born, we opened the restaurant at Royal Hospital Road [Restaurant Gordon Ramsay]. But the time we did spend together was quality.

None of their noses has been put out of joint and they're so excited about Oscar.'
The youngest of the four older children, Tilly, [https://pinfaves.com/jamie-park-weight-loss/ pinfaves.com] is 17 and will soon be of an age to leave home, as the others have. That's hit him hard, he says.
‘It's horrible because it slaps you without warning. That empty silence with no one to cook breakfast for at the weekend, it's grim. There's no script to prepare yourself for that.'
Meg is about to graduate from Oxford Brookes University.

The twins are 19 now: Holly is at Ravensbourne University in London, Jack went to Exeter University in September. ‘I took him there and came back on the M4. Sitting there in traffic, I was a mess, man.' Again he admits to crying his eyes out - the only other time he has done that in years, apart from Oscar's birth.
‘Suddenly my best mate wasn't there. I couldn't go on the bike with him, couldn't go for a swim. Thank God I've got tinted windows so no one could see how much of a mess I was.'
Jack's mother was more pragmatic. ‘Tana just said: "You'll be fine, he's coming back home next weekend." But that's not the point.

Do you know the hardest thing? You look in the back seat of the car, and there's three seatbelts all empty. It kills you.'
Jack's departure was hardest. ‘It was a tough blow because I only had one son. The three girls are funny. They're glamorous, they're naughty and everything you want from a daughter.
So respectful. But with their brother going, now I've got no one to have banter with. I've got no one to be me. I've got no one to flex my muscles or have a bit of fun with. So having Oscar has been a massive relief.'
Then Ramsay says something even more surprising.

He has found new friendship and mutual support with the person you'd least expect - Jamie Oliver, his great rival for the title of Britain's favourite TV chef. The pair have been calling each other out in public for a decade now, starting when Oliver had a go at Ramsay for criticising a woman's appearance and was accused in turn of being ‘a one-pot wonder'.

Oliver has hit back over the years by saying his rival is ‘deeply jealous', a ranter who acts like he's got dementia and a worse cook than his wife. And Ramsay has responded by slating Oliver's cooking and his weight. But it all got out of hand in 2017 when Oliver made an offhand comment about having five children to Ramsay's four.
In his sensitive state so soon after the loss of a son, Ramsay took it as a reference to the miscarriage, saying: ‘Tana was mortified, really mortified.'
After all this then, it is astonishing to hear that the war between them is over.

‘I put a phone call in to Jamie last year, seeing the s*** he was going through. We met at the Ivy Club, got absolutely p***** together and I tried to give him as much advice as I could. It was just unfair to see him being taken down.'
Oliver had just been forced to put £13 million of his own money into his company to save at least some of his restaurants from going bust, but he was being criticised for letting his staff down. How was the offer of peace received?

‘Good. We spent time together last year. Jools and Tana have always had a lovely connection. Jamie rented a house next door to us in Cornwall, we had a barbecue together and again we were drinking and talking at midnight. But to see that vulnerability in his eyes at 42…'
The family at home, back row from left, Megan, Holly, Gordon and Tana; front row, Jack and Tilly
Ramsay is a decade ahead.

‘I thought: "I've been through what he's going through ten years ago, fighting to get my name clear and look after my business.' Ramsay had a long-running court battle with Tana's father, Chris Hutcheson, who was sacked as his chief executive then hacked the company computers. In June 2017, he was jailed for six months.
‘It was appalling to see Jamie worry, so I reached out. I thought: this is our careers, it's in our blood. We're those generous, vulnerable, talented individuals who know that everywhere you turn, left or right, there's someone trying to take advantage of you. So I said, "What can I do to help this ship stop sinking?" Our CEOs met and exchanged ideas.'
Their collaboration was not enough to save the Oliver restaurants from collapse this week. Ramsay was talking before that news broke.
What about all those nasty words?
‘That's all banter,' says Ramsay. ‘We've had a dig in and a few little swipes, but it's no different to two football players, one for Liverpool and one for Manchester City. There's hatred on the turf, but three weeks later you're playing together for the national team and you love each other again.'
Are they friends now? ‘Yeah. There's a level of respect and mutual admiration. We had an amazing time at the barbecue and the kids always get on.'
Those kids must have a lot to talk about.
Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay in 2006. ‘It was appalling to see Jamie worry, so I reached out. I thought: this is our careers, it's in our blood'
‘Oh my God!

Being in the heads of Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay's daughters must be a nightmare! Poor girls!'
This is definitely a new, softer Ramsay - ‘I think I've matured. I'm less anxious.' But his great passions rise again when we start to talk about Lucky Cat.
‘It's a modern interpretation of authentic Japanese cuisine, highlighting some British ingredients. I had a pan-Asian restaurant on that site in Mayfair for 14 years called Maze, so how do we reinvent and upgrade that?'
The answer is in the food that starts to arrive in front of us in a private room upstairs at his Heddon Street Kitchen restaurant, where Lucky Cat's executive chef Ben Orpwood has come to cook.
‘This is Australian kingfish, sliced and served raw with our house soy sauce, which is made from sake, soy sauce, mirin, bonito flakes and kombu - we bring the mixture to the boil and infuse for five days,' says Orpwood.

‘Nasturtium flowers are involved too.'
The chef also brings English asparagus with an emulsion made from smoked ponzu, a dark Japanese sauce; then crispy pigeon leg with plum sauce and pickled nashi pear. The tastes are unusual and extraordinary.
They attracted a lot of love when Ramsay held a pop-up Lucky Cat preview in Soho earlier this year, but there was also a big stink after an online food writer called Angela Hui attacked the event. She described herself as ‘the only East Asian person in a room full of 30 to 40 journalists and chefs', and said the restaurant's approach was: ‘Japanese?

Chinese? It's all Asian. Who cares?'
The accusation was that Ramsay was playing fast and loose with someone else's way of life - or cultural appropriation.
Ramsay sighs. ‘I have to turn a blind eye to that bulls*** now.

I'm too busy. If it was ten years ago, I would stand up and tell them all to f*** off. Now I'm a different beast.'
But he just can't stop himself from responding. ‘Judge the food first, right? I go to some of the best Japanese restaurants in LA: 90 per cent of the cooking brigade are Mexican. I was on the beach in Cornwall yesterday and there's a place called Taco Boys UK: two young guys in a horsebox on the beach, selling the best tacos.

I've got a lot friends who are Mexican chefs who would wet themselves if they tasted those tacos. Then there's Jamie. He's not Italian, he's from Essex. So what is this? We can't go anywhere?'
Ramsay points out that he studied classical French cooking in France as a young man, mastered the art then brought it back here with an English twist that won him three Michelin stars.

He's also run highly successful restaurants in Japan and Hong Kong. So he's furious. ‘How did we get so oversensitive about this multicultural thing? Can you imagine if British chefs had to stick to British cuisine? Are you saying that cooking in this country can only be about steak and kidney pudding, grilled liver and spotted dick?
‘We're celebrating 19 years of having three Michelin stars.

That's years of utter perfection. That takes a lot of guts, commitment and passion. I'm certainly defensive of my team.'
Despite his strong reaction here, Ramsay claims to not take social media too seriously. ‘There's no credibility in comments on social media.

I have this argument with my daughters. Holly had her hair dyed pink a couple of weeks back. I loved it. Tana hated it. Holly posted a picture then she said: "Oh my God, everyone hated it." I said: "No, there are strangers on your feed. You don't know who they are. So, let's put this into perspective."'
This Gordon Ramsay is very different from the one we see turning the air blue on Kitchen Nightmares.

‘People think I'm going to tell them to f*** off every time I see them, and that's just not true.'
Isn't that his fault? Didn't he create the monster for the sake of fame? ‘But you have to be lethal, absolutely ruthless on those programmes.

I haven't got three months to turn a business around, I've got 24 hours. When they're successful, we don't get praised. When they fail, we get blamed. So you're f***** either way, but that's the nature of the beast.'
He thinks for a moment.

‘So yeah, maybe I need to stop doing that. Maybe I need to retire from TV.' Is he serious? ‘Maybe that's what I need to do. F*** it!'
Suddenly the press officer who has been sitting quietly with us breaks in to offer coffee, interrupting this dangerous line of thought.
A move like that could cost his company millions. Maybe he will retire, though. Ramsay is unpredictable, that's part of what makes him brilliant. You wouldn't put it past him in this state, cracked open like an egg by the birth of his son. At least whatever he does next won't make him faint.
My three big loves outside of my family are Northern Ireland, Manchester United and Coleraine, and I still follow them with the same passion as when I was a child.'
Asked whether his support for United would have him rooting for Cristiano Ronaldo for the award, he joked that he hoped to persuade him to rejoin the club, which is under pressure due to some poor recent results.
'I'm taking a shirt with Ronaldo's name and number on it, and hopefully he'll put it on and get on the plane back with me.'
Upcoming projects: Nesbitt, pictured at home in South London before his OBE was announced, will next be seen playing killer dentist Colin Howell in three-part ITV drama The Secret
Next year will also mark the return of TV hit Cold Feet after 12 years, with Nesbitt reprising his role as Adam.
He said: 'It's quite daunting.

There is a bit of you which thinks 'will this be OK?', because it will be compared to something that happened before, but, you know, why not?
'I read the first couple of scripts and it was fun to see those characters again, how much they have changed.
'I mean, Adam still seems to be a bit of an idiot, so I'm going to have to try and cast my eyes back to the days of eejitry, shall we say.'
The chief executive of the Wave Trauma Centre, Sandra Peake, said Nesbitt's award was 'thoroughly deserved recognition'.
'Since Jimmy became a patron of Wave in 2000 he has been a constant source of support for our work with victims and survivors,' she said.
'He has raised funds without which Wave simply could not have delivered the range of services that are essential to those who need them most.
'He also de-stigmatised talking about the Troubles by highlighting the impact on those bereaved and injured.
'But more than that he does so much that is below the radar particularly with the families of the Disappeared.
'Everyone in Wave is delighted that his compassionate and caring support for those who have suffered during the Troubles is recognised.'
IMELDA STAUNTON
Hard graft: Stage and screen actress Imelda Staunton is getting a promotion from OBE to CBE
After years of hard graft on the West End stage and on film sets across the world, Imelda Staunton is getting a promotion from OBE to CBE.
The actress, 59, was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2006, but will now be upgraded to Commander as she is honoured for services to drama.
In an interview earlier this year, she said of the OBE: 'I just wish my mum had been alive to see it.

She would have been so thrilled.'
Born in North London to a hairdresser and a labourer, Staunton joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) at the age of 18. Selma actor: David Oyelowo said receiving an OBE for services to drama feels like a 'full-circle moment'
Selma actor David Oyelowo said receiving an OBE for services to drama feels like a 'full-circle moment'.
The Oxford-born actor, who has received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the acclaimed HBO drama Nightingale, recalled how at 18, the Prince's Trust gave him a grant of £325 so he could join a youth theatre production that his parents could not afford.
He said: 'That production set me on the path to becoming an actor.

To be honoured by the Queen in this way having been aided by her son's charity feels like a beautiful full-circle moment.'
In a review of Nightingale, the New York Times described his performance as 'nothing less than amazing.'
In the race for the 2015 Academy Awards, many felt Oyelowo had been snubbed after he failed to receive a nomination for his role as Martin Luther King Jr in Selma.
Oyelowo revealed in an interview with The Independent that Hollywood star Brad Pitt had been equally unimpressed that he had not been nominated.
He told The Independent: 'We'd filmed Nightingale by this point but it's an unusual piece and we were struggling to get film festival distribution.
'It had been sent to Brad Pitt's production company Plan B but, as you know, he's a very busy man so he hadn't found time to watch it.
'Then the Oscar nominations were read and Brad was so unhappy about the snub to Selma that he decided to watch Nightingale that day, and he then took it to HBO and said "you have to believe in this film".'
The 39-year-old may be one of Hollywood's leading talents but he began in the UK, performing in theatre before landing a part in TV spy drama, Spooks.
He played MI5 officer Danny Hunter from 2002 to 2004, and took supporting roles in films such as Lincoln, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, The Paperboy, Jack Reacher and The Butler.
In an interview with the Radio Times in August this year, he spoke passionately about diversity on UK screens.
He said: 'It's time for a change, but the question is: What needs to change in order for the frustrating regression of diversity on British television to cease?'
Overlooked?

In the race for the 2015 Academy Awards, many felt Oyelowo had been snubbed after he failed to receive a nomination for [https://pinfaves.com/jamie-park-weight-loss/ https://pinfaves.com/jamie-park-weight-loss/] his role as Martin Luther King Jr in Selma
The actor is a patron of the TriForce Creative Network, which supports and empowers people from diverse backgrounds.
Later in his Radio Times interview, he commented: 'There are fantastic British film producers who are white and who feel passionate about the issue of diversity.
'But the point remains that no-one is going to be as passionate about telling your stories and your history as you are.'
August also saw the announcement that he would narrate the new James Bond novel, Trigger Mortis, by Anthony Horowitz.
He followed in the footsteps of other actors who have narrated Bond novels, including Kenneth Branagh, Hugh Bonneville, Tom Hiddleston and Rosamund Pike.
He said: 'Anthony Horowitz has crafted a taut thriller with a fascinating cast of characters and stunning action sequences that I am relishing bringing to life.
'It is an acting challenge as exciting to me as any I have faced on stage or screen. I get to play James Bond!

It doesn't get much better than that.'
The 2016 Golden Globes will see him go head-to-head with fellow Brit and Luther star Idris Elba in the best performance by an actor in a limited series or motion picture made for television category.
BERYL VERTUE
Sherlock producer: Beryl Vertue was 'chuffed to bits' to be awarded a CBE in the honours list
Sherlock executive producer Beryl Vertue said she was 'chuffed to bits' to be awarded a CBE in the New Year's honours list.
She has been instrumental in bringing to screens hits including the modern-day sleuthing drama, comedies Men Behaving Badly and Coupling, and the BBC's latest adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover, and has been aptly honoured for services to television drama.
It was a family victory for Vertue, who said the CBE was 'a great honour and one I would not have received were it not for the support of the many talented people I have worked with over the years, particularly my two daughters, Sue and Debbie.'
Vertue received an OBE in the 2000 New Year's honours list for services to independent production television after founding Hartswood Films in 1988, where daughter Sue is a producer and Debbie is director of operations.
'Hartswood Films was one of the very first independent production companies when I launched it, and I'm proud to say we're still independent today,' she said.
Vertue has played a hand in some of Britain's most defining TV comedies and dramas, beginning as an agent for renowned writers such as Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes and comedy stars Tony Hancock and Frankie Howerd, before moving into production.
She worked with many of the talent at her production company Associated Films London to produce feature film versions of Up Pompeii, Till Death Us Do Part, and Steptoe And Son.
Those in the USA have Vertue to thank for years of laughter too as she took the formats of the latter two across the pond, as well as making American adaptations of Upstairs Downstairs and It's A Knockout.
Popular drama: Many Benedict Cumberbatch fans will likely view Sherlock - which is written by her son-in-law Steven Moffat - as her greatest achievement
She said one career highlight was as executive producer on 1975 film Tommy, bringing together a star-studded cast of Jack Nicholson, The Who, Elton John, Eric Clapton and Tina Turner in pinball-mania.
Many Benedict Cumberbatch fans, however, will likely view Sherlock - which is written by her son-in-law Steven Moffat - as her greatest achievement.
Vertue has executive produced all three seasons of the acclaimed series and returns for the New Year's Day special which will transport Cumberbatch's Holmes and Martin Freeman's Watson into the Victorian period to solve The Case of the Abominable Bride.
The honour will be one on a heaving shelf-full that includes the Bafta Alan Clarke award for Outstanding Creative Contribution to Television and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards.
MATTHEW BOURNE
Choreographer Matthew Bourne said receiving a knighthood came as a 'great surprise' and he believes himself to be the 'first dance knight' outside of the National Ballet companies.
His list of accolades is as long as his list of productions, such is his success at making every musical, opera, film or play he is involved in a massive hit.
Now he can add a knighthood to the formidable line-up.
Knighthood: Bourne can be credited with bringing a contemporary twist to every production he touches
Swan Lake has gone on to become the world's longest-running ballet production, winning scores of accolades, including three Tony Awards.
Born in east London in 1960, Bourne attributes his love of musicals and theatre to his 'ordinary East End working class' parents.

But he has previously said he did not discover ballet or modern dance until he was in his early 20s, and did not start his own dance training until the relatively late age of 22.
Bourne remains the only Briton to have won the Tony Award for both Best Choreographer and Best Director of a Musical.
He has also won five Olivier Awards, and in 2014 was awarded the prestigious De Valois Award for Outstanding Achievement at the National Dance Awards.
In 2015 he became the first dance figure to be given The Stage Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre presented by the UK Theatre Awards, and he also helps young people to be given the opportunity to dance, establishing his charity Re:Bourne in 2008.
He was awarded the OBE in 2001.
MARTYN LEWIS
Especially since I opened the brown envelope expecting it to be a speeding ticket.'
Speed was a key theme of his most recent hit Rush, the biographical drama based on the lives of Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl.
His career success took off with the first of his Blair trilogy, television film The Deal, which saw Michael Sheen and David Morrissey as Tony Blair and Gordon Brown make a pact that would allow Blair a clear run in the 1994 Labour leadership campaign.
Sheen reprised his role in The Queen, for which Mirren won her first Oscar and for which Morgan was Oscar-nominated for best original screenplay.
Renowned US critic Roger Ebert called The Queen 'a spellbinding story' and praised Morgan's writing as 'intense, focused, literate, observant', making the audience privy to the intimate, behind the scenes working of the UK's most powerful families.
His triptych was completed by 2009's The Special Relationship, where Sheen starred opposite Dennis Quaid's Bill Clinton.
Sheen also collaborated on Morgan's first play Frost/Nixon, opening to rave reviews at the Donmar Warehouse in 2006, and that was turned into a film with the same cast in 2008.
Morgan's knack for turning history into box-office gold is evident in his other hits The Last King Of Scotland, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Damned United.
The story of Bristol landlord Christopher Jefferies, ravaged by the media when he was arrested by police investigating the murder of his 25-year-old tenant, Joanna Yeates, became one of Morgan's biggest successes in 2014.
The Lost Honour Of Christopher Jefferies won two British Academy Television Awards - for best mini series and for best actor for Jason Watkins's portrayal of Jefferies - with Morgan lauded for his sensitive handling of the case.

adverts.addToArray({"pos":"inread_player"})Advertisement
