An insurance salesman returned to his home after a four-day business trip in mid-September to find a squirrel had stashed 42 gallons of walnuts in his Chevrolet pickup truck.
Bill Fischer, 56, has been waging a war against his furry neighbor in Fargo since 2013, when he says a red squirrel first chose his Chevy Avalanche as the spot to store its harvest for the winter.
Fischer says he has come to expect the find when his neighbor's black walnut tree reaches maturation every other year, but this time the creature may have outdone itself.
Every other year a red squirrel stores yellow-husked black walnuts from a neighbor's tree in North Dakota resident Bill Fischer's Chevrolet Avalanche (pictured). This year, however, Fischer says it may have set a record
Fischer was able to fill seven six gallon buckets with the walnuts he found in his truck this year
Although troublesome, Fischer (pictured) says he can't help but laugh at the situation
'The squirrel set a record,' Fischer told the . 'Most I've ever pulled out was four or five six-gallon buckets. This year was seven.'
In photos he posted to Facebook, the yellow-husked nuts can be seen filling nearly every conceivable crevice on the pickup, from the engine bay to the fenders and bumper.
He even had to remove the bumper and fender panels on the front end of the truck to to get to them all.
All told, he collected around 150 pounds of nuts this year, which he offered to give away for free on Facebook.
He says he believes the squirrel will enter the truck's innards through the rear, move along its frame rail and place the nuts mainly under the hood and in its fender.
By now, Fischer knows its best to wait for the squirrel to harvest all the nuts from under the tree before cleaning up.
The cleanup is labor intensive, and despite his best effort, Fischer still finds nuts rolling around the vehicle
Fischer says he believes the squirrel chose his Avalanche to his its nuts due to ample storage space and easy access to its innards
He says he believes the squirrel will enter the truck's innards through the rear, move along its frame rail and place the nuts mainly under the hood and in its fender.
By now, Fischer knows its best to wait for the squirrel to harvest all the nuts from under the tree before cleaning up.
RELATED ARTICLES

Share

But this year he cleared out the Avalanche a little early before he went on his trip. When he returned on September 17, he found thousands of the nuts stored there, he told the Post.
Fischer has tried a number of techniques including placing a mixture of Tabasco sauce and cayenne pepper under the hood, and parking the truck further away from the tree, but nothing has seemed to work.
Fischer says he believes has been dealing with this particular squirrel (pictured) since 2013, and the occurrence happens every other year when the walnuts on his neighbor's tree reach maturation
He offers up the nuts for free on Facebook after he cleans them out of his pickup
'I've got other vehicles that sit very close to that tree, and it's always my truck,' he told the Post. Roll out the dough then stretch and press it with your fingers so it comes out very thin.
Step 7: Cut the edges of the dough neatly to obtain a large rectangle.

Melt the 100g butter and spread some liberally over the dough using a brush. Step 8: Spread the filling over the dough, leaving a 3cm margin on each long edge, then roll the strudel towards you using the tea towels as an aid.
Step 9: Carefully place the strudel on the baking tray, bending both ends if it is very long and placing the seam underneath. Step 10: Brush the top of the strudel with the rest of the melted butter, then bake for 35 minutes.

Use a tea strainer to sift some icing sugar and cinnamon over it.
Styling: Blandine Boyer, Anne Loiseau
RELATED ARTICLES Share this article Share

adverts.addToArray({"pos":"inread_player"})Advertisement

Just one alcoholic drink could be enough to raise the risk of suffering an irregular heartbeat.
Around 1.4million people in the UK have a particular type of irregular heartbeat, which has the medical name atrial fibrillation.
It is known that the condition can be triggered by too much , with many people suffering 'holiday heart syndrome' after over-indulging during or the summer holidays.
But now a study suggests just a small amount of alcohol can bring on an episode.
Drinking alcohol could raise the risk of an irregular heartbeat, study suggests
RELATED ARTICLES

Share

Researchers recruited 100 people with intermittent atrial fibrillation, where episodes come and go usually within 48 hours.
Tracking them for four weeks on average, they found people struck by an irregular heartbeat were twice as likely to have had an alcoholic drink in the past four hours.
Episodes of irregular heartbeat were 38 per cent more likely for every 0.1 per cent in blood alcohol concentration.
During the study period, 56 people had episodes of atrial fibrillation and more than 80 per cent of these were men.
People having an irregular heartbeat episode were around 3.5 times more likely to have had two alcoholic drinks in the past four hours, compared with those whose heartbeat was normal.
Dr Gregory Marcus, lead author from the University of California, San Francisco, said: 'Drinking alcohol is associated with an increased chance that atrial fibrillation will occur in a matter of hours.

Avoiding alcohol, or [https://pinfaves.com/blair-walnuts-weight-loss/ pinfaves.com] cutting down on it, should reduce people's risk from the condition.'
Episodes of atrial fibrillation are best avoided because it can leave people short of breath, dizzy and exhausted, while pooling of blood in the heart risks forming clots which can lead to strokes.
Researchers found that people having an irregular heartbeat episode were around 3.5 times more likely to have had two alcoholic drinks in the past four hours (stock image)
People with the condition in the study wore an ECG monitor - which tracks the heart's rhythm and electrical activity - to record the time and length of each episode they suffered.
Participants were then asked to press a button every time they had a standard drink like a glass of wine, a bottle of beer or a single shot of spirits.
At the same time an ankle monitor recorded their alcohol consumption and they had finger-prick blood tests to calculate how much they had consumed in the past two weeks.
The study found the more people drank, the greater their risk of having an episode of irregular heartbeat.
Alcohol may speed up the time it takes for the upper chambers of the heart to recover from the electrical activation of the heart pumping, so that it moves on to the next heartbeat too quickly or erratically.
The researchers, writing in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, state: 'Contrary to a common belief that heavy alcohol consumption is required to influence atrial fibrillation, it seems that even one alcoholic drink may be enough to increase the risk for a discrete atrial fibrillation event.'
The study does not suggest alcohol can trigger atrial fibrillation in people who do not have it already, but previous evidence has suggested that may be the case.
<div class="art-ins mol-factbox sciencetech" data-version="2" id="mol-3b568420-09e1-11ec-a19d-d5f07a3101d3" website heart rhythm can be triggered by alcohol, study suggests

A doctor has revealed how small dietary changes can ease symptoms during every phase of your menstrual cycle.
Los Angeles-based doctor Alona Pulde is the woman behind the groundbreaking documentary Forks Over Knives and co-wrote the bestselling of the same name.
In collaboration with Lifesum, she's revealed how small changes to what we're eating can have a huge impact on how we feel during our period -from consuming iron-rich foods while menstruating, to clearing out excess oestrogen with fermented food.
'What you eat plays a huge role in overall health creation, including how you feel throughout your cycle,' said Dr Pulde.
'Most people think of periods as just a week-long occurrence, but in reality it's a month-long cycle and nutrient-dense foods can help replenish your body and balance your hormones throughout.'
Here, Femail reveals exactly which types of food to eat at each phase of your cycle to ensure your body is getting the nutrients it needs.
Los Angeles-based doctor Alona Pulde revealed how diet impacts you during each phase of your menstrual cycle
FOLLICULAR PHASE
This is the first two weeks (days 1-12) of the cycle, and overlaps with the menstrual phase. During this phase, oestrogen levels start to rise again and energy increases.
With more energy you may also notice greater motivation to exercise and get back on your healthy eating track.
RELATED ARTICLES

Share

Eating fibre-rich foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes) and fermented foods (kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut) help to metabolise and clear excess oestrogen.
'During this phase, it's common to have more energy,' says Dr Pulde. 'Now is a great time to incorporate nutrient-dense foods rich in vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, including fruits, vegetables, nuts/seeds and whole grains.'
During the first two weeks of your period, Dr Alona Pulde advises eating fibre-rich foods and fermented food and drinks such as Kombucha (stock image)
OVULATION PHASE
Between the follicular and luteal phase is ovulation, which lasts from about day 12-14. During this time you may experience some cravings so it's important to eat enough of the type of food that fills you up, especially those foods that are rich in fibre and high in nutrients.
These include fruits (berries, [https://pinfaves.com/blair-walnuts-weight-loss/ https://pinfaves.com/blair-walnuts-weight-loss/] apples, pears, bananas), vegetables (broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, artichoke, kale, sweet potatoes), legumes (beans, lentils, peas), whole grains (quinoa, oats, whole wheat pasta, barley) and nuts/seeds (almonds, pistachios, sesame/pumpkin/sunflower seeds).
This is also a good time to ensure you are including healthy fats, including avocados, chia or flax seeds, walnuts, etc.
Eat at regular times to maintain stable blood sugar levels and always keep a nutritious snack with you so you can quickly fill up some energy.
Some snack ideas include avocado and spinach toast, hummus and cucumber or carrots, frozen banana and peanut butter, and edamame. Make sure to stay hydrated during the day by always having a water bottle with you and using apps like Lifesum to track your water intake.
'Remember, everyone's body works differently, and our needs vary,' adds Dr Pulde. 'Focusing on a balanced, varied nutrient-dense diet that provides enough energy is key - not only for performance, but for our overall well-being.'
Between the follicular and luteal phase is ovulation, when the doctor recommends healthy fats such as avocado and eat at regular times to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Stock image
LUTEAL PHASE
This is the last two weeks (day 14-28) of the cycle. During this phase, both oestrogen and progesterone are raised. This is when pain feels a bit more intense as large amounts of prostaglandins, a chemical that stimulates contractions, is released.
To help lower levels, and therefore reduce cramps, focus on anti-inflammatory nutrients such as omega 3 (walnuts, flaxseed, chia seeds), antioxidants like vitamin C (found in fruit - particularly berries - and vegetables) and vitamin E (found in leafy greens, avocado, and whole grains).
'In this phase, it's common to feel tired,' says Dr Pulde. 'Ensure you eat complex carbs that provide fibre and vitamins to balance moods and curb cravings, including whole-grains, beans and starchy vegetables.
'Try to avoid or cut back on caffeine and alcohol. And when energy levels drop, healthy snack options are ideal, including hummus and veggie sticks, apples and almond butter, and homemade fruit and nut bars.'
During the last two weeks of your cycle, the doctor advises eating plenty of foods with anti-inflammatory nutrients such as omega 3 to ease symptoms caused by raised estrogen and progesterone. Stock image
MENSTRUAL PHASE
This is the phase of your cycle where oestrogen and progesterone levels are lowest; you shed your uterine lining, and bleeding occurs.
It typically lasts between three to seven days and can involve cramping, fatigue, low back pain and mood swings.
When period blood is lost, it's important to up your iron-rich foods with animal products such as red meat, poultry and fish (heme iron) or plant-based products, including leafy greens, beetroot and legumes (non-heme iron).
During the menstrual phase the doctor advises eating iron-rich foods with animal products such as red meat, poultry and fish.

'I've even parked purposely out on the street — as far away as I can from the walnut tree — and they still go find the Avalanche and hide them in there.'
He said he believes the squirrel chose the Avalanche due to easy access to its insides, and more space under the hood.
Although the cleanup is labor intensive, Fischer said he can't help but find the humor in the situation.
Fischer believes the culprit is a single red squirrel (pictured in a file image) that has chosen the pickup as its dedicated storage space
'With all the time taking the fenders off, what can you do but still laugh?
I find these buns one of the most therapeutic things to make.

You pretty much can't go wrong when making them, so long as you don't overbeat the batter. They're fluffy, light, wholesome, and with a surprising crunch from the walnuts. They work best when at least a quarter of the flour in the mix is white. This being said, I've tried this recipe with wholemeal and rye and they still rise perfectly.
You could also try buckwheat flour, a malted blend, dark or light rye, the list goes on.
MAKES 10-12 buns
400g plain white flour
400g rye flour
a generous pinch of salt
2 tsp dried instant yeast
approx.

400ml lukewarm water
1 small apple, cut into very small cubes, seeds discarded
a large handful of walnuts, roughly chopped
approx. 1 tbsp sesame seeds
coarse or cracked black pepper
In a mixing bowl, combine the white flour with the rye flour, salt and yeast.

Make a hole or well in the middle of the flour and slowly pour in your warm water.Using a wooden spoon, begin to mix the ingredients together. You don't have to be too gentle, but don't go overboard. The mixture should be relatively sticky. It doesn't form a solid dough, just a rough mix, so add a tad more water if your mixture is too dry, or a little of either flour if the mixture is too wet.Cover with a tea towel and put to one side, preferably in a warmer space in your kitchen. Ideally you'd leave this overnight or for at least 8 hours, but if the space is warm enough, the mixture will have risen in 2 hours. When you're ready to cook, preheat your oven to 240˚C/220°C fan/gas 8.

When you remove the tea towel you'll notice that the mixture has risen - it will still be sticky and more air bubbles/streaks will have formed. Carefully add your apple and walnuts and gently fold into the mix. The mix can be quite rough.Line a large baking tray with greaseproof paper or [https://pinfaves.com/blair-walnuts-weight-loss/ pinfaves.com] a silicone baking liner.
Using two large spoons, begin to take sections of the dough to form bun-type shapes, again quite rough. You can use the spoons to your advantage, moving them about to shape the dough. Repeat until all of the dough has been used up.Sprinkle the rolls with the sesame seeds and some pepper.

You could add some extra salt on top here too.Bake in the oven on a middle shelf for about 20-25 minutes. The time may vary depending on your oven. The tops of the buns should be brown and they should be firm and crispy enough to feel solid when you tap them.Remove the buns from the oven and allow to cool for a few moments before eating.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container for about a week.
RELATED ARTICLES Share this article Share

adverts.addToArray({"pos":"inread_player"})Advertisement
