Retro Sofas and Funky Chairs – A Real London Story There’s something about vintage pieces that grabs me. The family armchair was covered in throws but still solid. It weren’t showroom-perfect, but it told a story. Back in the sixties, you didn’t buy throwaway chairs. You’d keep the same chair your whole life. It’s in the sag of the springs. I rescued a battered armchair from outside a shop in Peckham. Some would’ve laughed at the state of it, single long chair but the weight told me it was the real deal.
It’s become part of my story. London’s furniture scene splits by neighbourhood. Mayfair goes glossy, with velvet armchairs. Shoreditch stays messy, with upcycled seats. Every corner tells a different story. Modern flat-pack doesn’t hold a candle. Old-school sofas become part of your life. They’re not perfect, but neither are we. Truth be told, a battered unusual sofa tells more truth than any showroom. A chair should hold your nights.
Next time you’re thinking of flat-pack, stop and think of the markets. Pick up a retro armchair, and let it shout London every time you sit.
