Big Buddy Portable Heater

As the pandemic re-surged this Fall, we began finding socially distanced out of doors get-togethers getting a bit of chilly. So I purchased a Mr. alpha heater portable "Big Buddy" portable propane heater to assist lengthen the season. Exchanging an empty 20lb propane tank for a crammed one costs about $20.

Note: if you use disposable 1lb propane camping cylinders as an alternative of 20lb refillable tanks, the propane cost is far higher… Bottom line: heating with propane can value about the same as with electric. How much heat: I should begin by saying that I like issues heat. It’s also really powerful to heat a substantial area outdoors for the reason that heat dissipates into the setting so rapidly. Anyone with a hearth pit is aware of that it’s only sizzling inside a few feet the pit. In our early trials, the big Buddy on excessive output made a fifty five degree day acceptable when we were outdoors and pretty close to it (2-three ft). I doubt it will be enough when temperatures drop under 50F; that most likely would require the larger patio heaters (and buy alpha heater buy alpha heater portable even then, not if it’s windy). I expect the massive Buddy would heat any enclosed and correctly ventilated area (e.g. a garage with ventilation) fairly shortly even on very cold days.



There are lots of testimonials to that effect. Bottom line: Good for electric heater for bedroom Spring and Fall evenings outdoors and for emergency indoor heat (see extra on indoor use under). Getting Propane: heaters like the large Buddy can run on the super common 20lb refillable propane tanks used for out of doors gas grills in addition to on one or two 1lb "camping" propane tanks. At Home Depot and Lowes, 1lb disposable tanks price around $5.50 each so heating utilizing them prices round $1/hour (on the low-heat setting). Obviously the 1lb tanks make the alpha heater discount much more portable. How long will a tank last: propane heaters can generate much more heat output, however at their increased outputs, they consume loads of propane. At excessive output (18K BTU), the BigBuddy consumes roughly 1lb of propane per hour, so it will price roughly $1/hour when run from a 20lb tank and more than $5.25/hour when using disposable 1lb tanks.



BTU patio heaters can get costly to run (a number of dollars/hour) even when using refillable tanks. Refilling 1lb tanks: people try to save cash by re-filling disposable 1lb camping cylinders from 20lb refillable tanks. There are a great deal of devices on Amazon specifically to do this and tons of youtube movies showing how. That is a foul Idea. Those cylinders are regulated by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and so they make it very clear that that is harmful and you should not do it. They even made a video… There is just one company that seems to make a legally refillable 1lb propane tank: Flame King (see here). I suspect they have a patent. You can get them at Lowes and elsewhere, however they are out of inventory all over the place. A pleasant video on the refillable cylinders is right here. Indoor Use: in keeping with the handbook (and every part I’ve read), the big Buddy can be utilized indoors for emergency use only (i.e. in case your heat is out due to a power outage).
