Best Over the Ear Headphones
Wireless headphones allow you to listen to music or podcasts anywhere, without the need to run an audio wire to your device. These headphones are ideal for use in public transport, at the office or at home.
Wireless over-ear headphones may have a premium design and exceptional noise cancellation. They are typically packaged in a stylish case.
Soundcore Life Q30
A major improvement over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018 The new over-ears appear better, feel stronger and generally feel more polished. They're still mostly made of plastic, however the hinges are more secure and the soft protein leather ear cups are a bit bigger. You can also swap out the 3.5mm cable for a premium USB-C version so that you can use them with stationary Hi-Fi systems and mobile Hi-Res players. They also have dual built-in mics that worked well in our tests with FaceTime, Skype and Microsoft Teams calls.
The Soundcore app has a wide variety of EQ presets that can be saved and tweaked to listen to podcasts or music in the style that you like. The Soundcore app makes it easy to use and makes these headphones stand out.
When ANC is on the Q30's 40mm drivers block out most of the ambient noise, and provide excellent listening. They have a natural sounding signature that leans slightly to the treble end, which some may be unable to reproduce bass (we got better results with the Bass Booster Equalizer preset). You can fix this easily by using the Soundcore App, which includes an 8-band Equalizer.
The headphones feature the power button and a pairing button on the left earcup and a USB-C port for charging. The right ear cup features play/pause, volume up/down buttons. Double-clicking on these controls allows you to skip tracks or play previous ones. They also support the ability to speak which allows you to request to change the mode or set an alarm. The right ear cup can be covered with your hands to activate ambient mode, so that you can hear what is going on around you without removing the headphones.
The Q30 rechargeable headphones offer a long battery life. In our tests with ANC switched on the Q30 lasted nearly an hour longer than its competitors. This allows you to enjoy a long flight, or a full day at work. They can be easily recharged with the included USB-C cable, and you'll see a warning when they're approaching empty.
Focal Bathys Wireless
Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of powerful over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offers both active noise cancellation as well as Bluetooth playback. They're made to be an elite, high-end headphone that are great for listening to podcasts and music on the go but also sound fantastic when used for audiophile home use too. The headphones are a bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their outstanding audio quality is what makes them stand out.
The Focal Bathys are packed in a small attractive white box with a textured finish. It contains everything you'll require. There's a fold-flat headphone carry case, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.
The battery's 600mAh capacity can last a whole day of listening to music casually. They also come with an audio input that you can make use of wired. Wirelessly, they are paired via Bluetooth. You can control their functions with an app (now called Focal and Naim in keeping with English Naim's products that are network-aware) or the button on the left earcup, which scrolls through ANC profiles like'silent','soft 'transparent,' and 'full.
The app allows you to change various settings such as the LED brightness, EQ presets including a'music profile' that sounds brighter and more neutral than the others and also their battery life. You can also select the ANC mode and level as well as setting an 'acoustic settings that adjusts the sensitivity in order to simulate the sound of the headphones in a different room.
The Focal Bathys feature bass-rich, rich sound profiles that adds extra energy, impact and warmth to your favorite tracks. The result is that vocals and instruments can sound muted, while certain elements like cymbals could be less noticeable than on other headphones. The headphones are also less effective at active noise cancellation compared to other headphones that feature more advanced technology, such as the Sony WH1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.
Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony headphones are renowned for their quality, and the WH1000XM5 headphones are no exception. It sits at the upper end of the mainstream over-ear headphone market, edging into the 'luxury lifestyle' area where the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc are a common sight. The XM5s can be expensive, but if you can find them, there's not a better pair of wireless cordless Headphones.
The XM5s have a lot of features that simplify the lives of the listener and automate some tasks they would otherwise have to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music compressed to near hi-res), as well as Bluetooth's LDAC Technology are all included. This allows streaming of high-quality audio at bitrates higher than conventional Bluetooth. It also has a built-in microphone for making calls hands-free.
As with the previous generation of WH blue tooth headphones the XM5s excel at noise cancellation. They're among the best at eliminating the continuous drones that can be heard in train and underground carriages. The XM5s do an excellent job of separating listeners from traffic noises of busy airports and streets, too.
Sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s may not be as precise in the lower frequencies as the XM4, Cordless headphones however, there's a greater sense of clarity and transparency, too. The bass on Rage Against The Machine’s Bullet in the Head shows off the Sonys power and clarity but without affecting the rest of the music. Similarly, Massive Attack's brooding Angel shows off the XM5s ability to produce accurate and precise bass notes.
Battery life is great and can last up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is in use and 40 hours if it's off. This is more than enough to last for an entire weekend or a few days of heavy usage.
The XM5s do not come with dust or Cordless headphones water resistant. Sony actually advises against sweating in them or taking them out in the rain. This might not be a problem for some people, but it could be a problem for anyone considering the XM5s who spend a lot of time in the gym or lives in a city that is rainy.
Apple AirPods Max
Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones that come with Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They feature 40mm dynamic drivers designed by Apple with neutral audio profiles that concentrates on the highs and mids while not going too loud on either end of the spectrum. This makes them great for both music and movies. They also offer superior fidelity compared to most rival headphones.
The headphones are light in build that feels comfortable on the head. The earcups, which are made of memory foam covered with woven fabric, and fit comfortably over the ear they do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. Ear cups can be tilted and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges offer a strong, but not too strong clamping force that makes sure the earcups remain in place during listening sessions.
A small button on the top of the right earcup lets you toggle noise cancelling modes. It also has a pushable jog dial-like button similar to the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it around to control volume and press it once three, twice, or times to playback the controls. Pressing and holding the button triggers Siri. The buttons are easy to use and are well-placed, however, I would like to see an option to power off or shut off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones go into standby mode when removed from your ears, or if they are placed in their case. They return to life when you place them over your head.
Another great feature is spatial audio, which makes use of the accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine where you're moving, then repositions the sound to make it seem like they're coming from those locations. This creates a theater-like experience with movies and videos that were recorded in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to spatial audio.
The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I'd feel a bit ripped off for spending $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the next-generation model will be better after a year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and better battery performance, so it's difficult to justify the additional expense for most people.
