The Q30's sound signature is natural, however it lags it's a bit harsh on treble. Some might find the bass response lacking (we had better results with the Bass Booster EQ). However, you can rectify this by using the Soundcore app, since there's an equalizer with 8 bands to allow you to tweak.

The left earcup features an power button as well as a pairing button and a USB-C charging port. The right earcup is equipped with buttons for play/pause, volume up/down and volume up/down. Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of high-quality over-ear Bluetooth headphones that feature active noise cancellation as well as Bluetooth playback. The XM5s are loaded with features that help listeners and, in certain instances, automate tasks they'd otherwise have to handle manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to close to high-res) is available as well as support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This lets high-quality audio be streamed at bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. There's a built-in mic for making hands-free phone calls.

The XM5 headphones aren't any different than the previous generation WH headphones in regards to noise cancellation. They're among the top-performing headphones to block out the constant drones heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s also excel at separating listeners from the hum of busy streets and airports.

The sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s aren't quite as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, but they have a higher level of clarity and realism as well. The bass on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head shows off the Sonys strength and clarity but without affecting the rest of the music. Similar to Massive Attack's brooding Angel showcases the XM5's' ability to deliver precise and precise bass notes.

The battery life is also good, with up to 30 hours of audio with ANC active and up to 40 hours when it's off. This is enough to cover an entire weekend or a few days' heavy use.

The XM5s aren't waterproof or dust-proof. In fact, Sony recommends that you don't sweat into them or wear them in the rain. This might not be a problem for many people, but it could prove a stumbling block for anyone considering the XM5s who spends much of their time at the gym or lives in a city with rain.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphone bluetooth headphones over-ear with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They feature 40mm dynamic drivers designed by Apple with an audio profile that is neutral and is focused on the mids and highs while not going overboard on either ends of the spectrum. They are great for movies and music. They also have higher fidelity compared to other headphones.

The headphones have a light build that feels comfortable on the head. The ear cups are constructed from memory foam covered in weaved fabric. They sit comfortably on the ears without putting pressure on the sides of the face. The ear cups can be flipped and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges feature a solid but not overly strong clamping force, which makes sure that the ear cups remain in place during listening sessions.

Toggle noise cancelling mode by pressing a small button located at the top of the right earcup. There's also a button that can be pushed, like a jog-dial, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to control volume and press once twice or three times to playback control. Siri is invoked by pressing and pressing the button. The buttons are well-placed and simple to use, however I missed having an option to turn off the headphones when they're not in use. The headphones are put into standby when they are removed from your ears or when placed in their case. They will come back into use when you place them on your head.

Spatial audio is another great feature. It makes use of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and iPhones or iPads to determine where you are moving. Then, it alters the position of the sound to make it seem to be coming from that particular location. This creates an immersive theater experience for videos and movies made in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices are able to listen to audio in spatial format.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I'd be a bit disappointed when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the newer model would be better after a year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and better battery performance, so it's difficult to justify the expense for most people.
