All told, Wild Hearts is a ton of fun, and definitely should be on your radar if you’ve been contemplating trying Monster Hunter but were put off by the sheer sea of options for character building. With that said, while the core loop may quickly feel comfortable for experienced monster hunters, I fear the nuance may be lost on those new to the game just looking for a quick taste to see if it's to their liking.

Initially, they'll find themselves stranded on a single pallet; however, as they accumulate resources and gold, they'll be able to expand farther and farther. While the concept is simple - collect resources, sell them, build more farms, - the repetitiveness of this experience can easily keep players hooked for hours to see what they'll be able to build n

I can’t say Wild Hearts will redefine your outlook on the fantasy hunting genre, nor will it usurp Monster Hunter from its throne, but I don’t think it needs to. Wild Hearts puts its fresh ideas forward, front and center, though it takes a while for them to really make an impact. You really can tell Omega Force (of Dynasty Warriors fame) developed this, in no small part thanks to them cribbing from their past work.

As for the building mechanics with the Karakuri? I honestly preferred using them for traversal more than fighting. Grappling hooks, helicopter lanterns, wind turbine generators, jump pads - you name it, there's probably a way to build it. It's like you have the entirety of Crash Bandicoot's level design in your back pocket, if you're willing to invest the time into getting to the best options. That's not purely a matter of grinding either, as certain buildables can only be unlocked at random when facing a Kemono's specific attack, which is... odd. I don't think any other game has had something akin to a PTSD triggering grant unlockables, but you do you, Wild Hearts.

Though your cooperative play is limited to a team of three players max, even just teaming up with a single person feels like an immense advantage. Your opponents gain more health based on how many allies you have, but thankfully their damage output isn’t magnified as well - they’re already absolutely brutal beasts to begin with. Getting curb stomped from an airborne stone-and-lava gorilla is bad enough on its own, so the mercy of it still only taking out two thirds of your health upon impact is greatly appreciated.
