10 Best Insects In Video Games
Insects are often not given the attention they deserve. Mammals can sometimes be a little dismissive of their diminutive neighbors. It is true that you are more likely to see other, furrier animals featured prominently in games . However, Insects have burrowed out their own place in the pantheon of notable game characters. From buzzing baddies to hive-minded heroes, insects have played some key roles in the games we love. A quick note though, there are a number of creepy crawlers that get a lot of love in games that aren’t technically insects, so don’t expect to see much in the way of spiders, scorpions, or worms. Our sincerest apologies go out to Jim and Amygdala; maybe you guys will get a list one day too.
10 Cazador
via Nexus Mods
What’s more horrifying than a bloodthirsty, poisonous insect that has a deadly stinger? A horrifying, bloodthirsty, poisonous insect with a deadly stinger that is the size of a dog. Meet the Cazador! This abomination comes to us via the Fallout series. And boy is it unpleasant.
While there are a number of flying predators in Fallout, the Cazador is absolutely one of the most noteworthy and fearsome. Especially since they come in groups. Oh, and Fable game guide we feel like we need to mention that poison again, because it ain’t no joke. When you hear the dreaded buzz of these winged horrors you are better off running than fighting.
9 Earth Defense Force Ants
Ants are pretty damn cool. Their ability to work as a group draws natural comparisons to human societies, which is going to catch our attention, as we are all a bunch of horrifying narcissists. However, they stop being a curiosity when they are the size of transport trucks.
Earth Defense Force sees you combating these giant monstrosities. And not in small numbers, either. Undeniably, these giant, horrifying insects make for some incredibly memorable antagonists. And hey, they are fun to blow up, too.
8 Charmy Bee
We all know what comes to your mind when you think of the legendary Sonic series. Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and, of course, Charmy. You know… the bee? From Knuckles' Chaotix? It was on the 32X! Okay, Charmy Bee may not have the same marquee value as some of the other characters in the series, but Charmy has his own unique, well, charm.
In a world filled with half-a-dozen angry versions of Sonic, Charmy is just happy to be here. Enthusiasm has to be worth something, people.
7 Mothra
Over the course of gaming history, Mothra has appeared in dozens of Godzilla games. This giant moth is notable for being one of the few Kaiju who is frequently depicted as an ally to Godzilla, as opposed to being another rival.
In the (underrated) Nintendo Godzilla games, Mothra is the only Kaiju who is playable in both titles. That’s right, Mothra was playable when Godzilla himself only acted as an antagonist. Mothra’s high-flying, dive-bombing antics make her one of the more enjoyable characters to play as in these games.
6 Baxter Stockman
Baxter Stockman is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’s reinterpretation of David Cronenberg’s The Fly. He is a human who has had his DNA fused with a fly’s. And, as a direct result, he has become more animalistic.
Baxter Stockman has since appeared as a boss in a ton of TMNT video games. Most notably, he was one of the exclusive new bosses added to the Nintendo version of TMNT: Fable Fansite The Arcade Game (in his fly form, at least) and he is the first boss of TMNT: Turtles In Time. Both of these games are classics , by the way. Check ‘em out and see what all the buzz is about.
5 Mr. Mosquito
Look, no one likes mosquitoes. Even among insect lovers, you aren’t likely to find many huge mosquito fans. However, we don’t tend to like carjackers either, yet that hasn’t stopped Grand Theft Auto from thriving. During the era of quirky, off-beat titles, one mosquito got to headline their own game: Mr. Mosquito.
The whole point of the game is to hunt the deadliest game: man. Well, you are basically just bugging a family and drinking their blood. It is a delightful little game. Turns out the one mosquito game out there doesn’t suck!
4 Q-Bee
In the land of Darkstalkers, you have the typical horror movie tropes. Vampires, werewolves, and Bee People. Q-Bee is the leader of these demonic, humanoid insects. However, while typically bees are generally considered harmless, and we encourage people not to panic around them, Q-Bee actively devours the souls of every living thing she can get her hands on. So yeah, more harmful than your typical bee.
Soul Bees, unlike their smaller, less bloodthirsty brethren, are seemingly able to sting at will. Q-Bee is even able to fire her giant stinger off as a projectile. She also controls swarms of giant bees. There is no denying Q-Bee’s charm. Though when she pulls out her giant cutlery don’t ask her what’s for dinner: you won’t like the answer.
3 Kabbu
In RPGs, bugs are frequently enemies, but rarely do they act as party members. Well, Bug Fables changes all of that. From top to bottom, it has a roster of insect characters. Kabbu is one of the protagonists of Bug Fables. He is a dependable, sturdy, battle-worn beetle. Kabbu is the kind of leader you can rely on, even if he is a beetle.
Kabbu isn’t all talk, either (though, he does have a problem with talking a little too much at times) and that horn on his head isn’t for show. If you get your timing right in battle, you will be skewering your opponents with that glorious horn.
2 Scyther
It is hard for a Pokemon to stand out these days. There are a ton of them waddling around, screaming their names, desperate to leave their mark. But standing out among the legendary first generation of Pokemon is an even more impressive feat. And that is exactly what Scyther does .
It isn’t hard to see why people would take a shine to this Pokemon. With his two sword-like, mantis-esque limbs, he is immediately an intimidating creature. This isn’t one of the cuddly Pokemon; Scyther is the best argument for why Pokemon can be cool, too.
1 The Knight
If you were to go back to 1997 and tell Symphony of the Night fans that after Konami collapsed in on itself, Alucard’s spiritual successor would be a beetle, it is unlikely that many people would have believed you. Yet, that is exactly what we got with Hollow Knight . And it is glorious.
Throughout your adventure, you will obtain a series of potent powers culled from other insects. You scale walls using the claws of a mantis; your double jump is performed using the wings of a butterfly. It all comes together to be an effectively atmospheric adventure through the deadened halls of a fallen insect kingdom.
