They've improved their active noise cancellation, removing the background noise and have a longer battery life.

These headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0 and support SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. The latter can transfer high-resolution audio, however you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. The WH-1000XM4s also allows you to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time and automatically switch between the two when required. This feature is enabled through the Sony Headphones Connect App and works flawlessly.

One subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensitiveness of their touch panels. They respond faster to the tap of a panel, and this makes them easier to control during a call or to listen to media. Sony also added an option that makes voices sound more clear and precise during calls which is noticeable and a nice touch.

Although the WH-1000XM4s may not be perfect, they are some of the top wireless headphones we've tested. They're comfortable, well-made, and come with an excellent battery that lasts for longer than 30 hours continuously. They can also be used in a passive manner using a TRS cable which is perfect when you're on the road or need to conserve power.

The WH-1000XM4s are better over the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. They also have a companion app that lets you tweak their audio performance and EQ settings are more flexible than B&W's. However, the B&Ws have more robust design and they're able to connect with two Bluetooth devices at once. They also support aptX HD, and they have an AI-driven engine that attempts to boost compressed music to high-resolution. This is referred to as DSEE Extreme and it does a good job of improving the clarity of music, especially when listening to lossless files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 Noise-Canceling headset is the latest version of a headset that has become a favorite among commuters and passengers across the world. The new model does not reinvent the wheel. It retains the same formula which was the basis of its predecessor's success but it also includes the USB-C technology and improved noise cancellation.

Similar to the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones feature a luxurious look and feel that exudes quality. The headband is made of plastic, yet it is sturdy and comfortable with hinges made of metal at pivot points and the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you open or retract the ear cups. The cups are cushioned and feature soft pads that can be worn over your ears without placing pressure on your head. They weigh 238 grams and are fairly compact when folded. They can be used when you're wearing a coat or sweater as the noise cancelling function works even when they're not on your head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not offer the best sound in this price range. The frequencies are fairly flat and lack the depth that headphones with higher prices might be capable of bringing out. The upper registers are boosted which is fine for most music genres but could be a problem for more delicate and complex genres. The bass is decent but is lacking power.

The possibility of pauseing the playback when you remove the headset is a feature that is absent. This is a feature that Bose's competitors have offered for several years. Another oversight is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQ settings within the app however it would be nice to have a manual control.

Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, with multipoint as well as more advanced codecs like aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's audio and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s have four microphones that are built-in to pick up your voice while on the phone. The quality of calls is generally good, but the headsets don't come with the handy capability to muffle your voice during playback, Bluetooth Headphones which is something other wireless headphones do. Update In February 2022, a firmware upgrade to the QC45s provided an option to adjust the volume manually in the audio app, which is a welcome improvement.

Focal is a French audio brand that produces high-performance headphones. They are well-known for their comfort and style, which let listeners know that they're hearing something unique. The Bathys are their first wireless noise-cancelling headphones. They look and sound stunning. They also come with a built-in high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for both wired and wireless listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for up to 30 hours. We actually got a little more from them and got over 40 hours on average of a single charge. If you have to charge the headphones then the indicator light on the right earcup will go red.

They have a decent amount of features for headphones of this price, including support for multiple devices simultaneously and automatic pairing (though you'll have to select the source device every time you need to listen). They have a built-in microphone that can be used to control voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. They also come with an easy-to-use interface that makes it simple to control your music as well as make calls.

For wireless headphones that are over-ear The Bathys perform very well in our tests of noise cancellation, reducing the background sound by around 9 decibels in average. It's not as impressive as the ANC in the Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, however it's still pretty effective.

The Sennheiser Momentum buy wireless headphones is a new version of the company's flagship Bluetooth headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid, but not spectacular entry in this category. The new model improves on the previous model with more sleek design, better gesture controls, and an enormous battery life.

The changes are subtle but can make for a pair of over ear headphones that feels like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s lay flat and do not fold however they do come with a nice hardshell case to protect them on the go. They also follow the trend of several other recent Bluetooth headphones, including those from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be incredibly device-agnostic. This means they work well with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, but do not have the additional features (like Find My support and head-tracked Spatial Audio) that you'll find on AirPods.

The most significant change is the huge battery that can play for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation turned on. This is more than the majority of the competitors offer and is enough for a multi-day trip without worrying about finding a power outlet to charge it.

Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget and Engadget, gave the headphones an 82-point score. He cited their audio quality and ANC features as the top strengths. He only has one complaint: they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and treble. This makes orchestral music sounds flat instead of grand. The Momentum 4s are comfy and should not put too much pressure on your ears or neck. They can be fidgety if you wear them around the home or for long listening sessions. They can move on your head and make a lot of head movements. This could cause them to unexpectedly wake up, which can be distracting during calls or music. Fortunately they shut down after 15 minutes of sleep by default and can be turned off manually off by pressing the power button.
