Easy to put together
Bedside cribs are usually easy to put together, and are usually on the smaller side, so they are able to be placed neatly beside your bed. They also tend to be lighter, which makes them more mobile. Georgina one of our MFM home testers, was extremely pleased with the Maxi-Cosi Lora crib for being "super straightforward to construct, with clear instructions and simple zips." The majority of models have built-in rocking functions. This can be very relaxing for your baby and aids in falling asleep. Some cribs offer a recline position, which is useful if your baby has reflux or colic. It is best to use them under supervision, and a doctor or health professional should be consulted prior to trying this position.
Many cribs for bed come with an umbrella to protect your baby from noise or light. This can help calm the baby. Some come with a storage compartment beneath, which is ideal to store extra blankets, nappies and clothing for your baby.
Many bedside cribs are convertible into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a major selling point for many families. MFM's 2021 Mother and Baby Awards winner the Joie Roomie Go, for example, has side panels that can be removed as well as conversion kits and tilting tummies that make it suitable for travel. It has five height adjustments that can be matched to your bed. The MFM home testers loved it for being comfortable, easy to assemble and compact. The Graco Play Yard (also known as the pack and play) is another favorite and was shortlisted for the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.

You can watch your child from the comfort of your bed with a crib that is placed at your bedside co sleeper. It's a great option for a new mum recovering from a c-section because you can easily pull baby out towards you for night feeds or nappy changes without having to get up. Some cribs let you lower the barrier completely. This lets you sleep with your baby without any risk. (Make sure that the crib you choose meets the current safety requirements). Easy to clean
Look for cribs with removable mattress covers that can be washed in the machine while looking at cribs for bed or travel cots. This will keep it clean and free of dribbles, leaky diapers, and spit-up. It is also recommended to choose a model that is easily disassembled, allowing you to clean and sanitise all the corners.
This is essential, as it will ensure that all dirt and germs have been removed. It is also important to ensure that the crib's sides are securely connected, ensuring there aren't any gaps or spaces in which your child could slip down or become trapped.
In addition to being easy to clean, you'll need a crib for your bed that is a comfortable place for your baby and is compatible with your bed. This is especially important if you're using a bedside crib to facilitate co-sleeping. These cribs are designed to be attached securely to the parent's side, which gives parents to have easy access to their infant throughout the night to feed and soothe them, while ensuring the safety that separate sleeping surfaces provide.
Another aspect to consider when choosing a crib to sleep on is whether it comes with additional features that you may find useful. For instance, some cribs have the ability to rock (useful for sleepers who are fussy) or tilt, but remember that you should only use this feature with care, as it can be dangerous if your child falls out.
You'll need to make sure that your crib or travel bed has a firm, flat mattress that is snugly fitted into the frame. This will decrease the risk of SIDS because your baby's head and feet won't fall into any gaps or folds in the bedding.
It's also an excellent idea to purchase a new mattress for your crib or travel cot, rather than using one that was given to you by someone else or purchased second-hand. Used mattresses tend to lose their shape over time, increasing the risk of SIDS. All new cribs should meet BS EN 1130:2019, the latest standard that introduces stricter requirements for secure and efficient sleep solutions.

Jasmin says that this crib is great because it is "easy to reach the baby in the middle of the night for fuss free feeding, and it's larger than other Moses Baskets, so it will last a longer period of time before my son is old enough to use it". She also appreciates how easy it is to clean and feels sturdy and well made. It can be placed on a divan, which makes it an ideal choice for those who have little space.
