The Surplus series consists of very deep, reasonably well drained and considerably poorly drained soils on mountain side slopes. These soils formed in dense till. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high or excessive in the organic surface layer and the mineral solum, and low to reasonably excessive within the substratum. Slope ranges from three to 45 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 1 degree C and mean annual precipitation is about 125 centimeters at the type location.

The B horizon receives the clay particles, aluminum, and iron oxides, in addition to organic matter washed down from the A and E horizons.
