EU Wants To Know If Microsoft Will Block Rivals After Activision Deal

BRUSSELS, Oct 6 (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators are asking Pkv games developers whether Microsoft will be incentivised to block rivals' access to "Call of Duty" maker Activision Blizzard's best-selling games, according to an EU document seen by Reuters.

The questionnaire, with about 100 questions, asked which of the rivals such as Nvidia's GeForce Now, Sony's Playstation, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna and Facebook Gaming could be considered the most attractive following the deal.

The company says it has taken "significant and urgent remedial steps, including increased risk, compliance, and security staff, approval of upgrades to surveillance technology as well as permanently exiting junkets and closing the Marquee nightclub".

"The proposed price for Unity appears well below its intrinsic value, and we would expect Unity to reject it for that reason," wrote Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Securities. "We think interference with the ironSource acquisition is problematic, and will cause Unity´s board to tread very carefully before agreeing to a sale outright."
The EU competition enforcer also asked if Activision's trove of user data would give the U.S. software giant a competitive advantage in the development, publishing and distribution of computer and console games, the EU document shows.

They asked if such exclusivity clauses would reinforce Microsoft's Windows operating system versus rivals, and whether the addition of Activision to its PC operating system, cloud computing services and game-related software tools gives it an advantage in the video gaming industry.

Regulators also wanted to know if there would be sufficient alternative suppliers in the market following the deal and also in the event Microsoft decides to make Activision's games exclusively available on its Xbox, its Games Pass and its cloud game streaming services.

The Star Entertainment Group (TSEG) says it has a plan for "a multi-year transformation of the governance, accountability and capabilities, culture and risk, and compliance management practices of the organisation".

CEO Barry McCarthy, a tech veteran who took over the company in February after a tumultuous end to former CEO John Foley's time at the company, said he hopes the decisions will 'better position the company for long term success.'

Most notably, his company-wide freezing of new hires and the canceling of a massive company holiday party due to the company's tanking stock prices while he attended a lavish, invite-only party for some of his instructors at New York City's Plaza Hotel.

Aug 9 (Reuters) - Gaming software company AppLovin Corp made an offer on Tuesday to buy its peer Unity Software Inc in a $17.54 billion all-stock deal, threatening to derail Unity's announced plan to acquire AppLovin's smaller competitor ironSource.

It pledged to take "additional necessary and appropriate action" so the NICC "can be satisfied The Star Sydney has taken sufficient steps, and has bound itself to take further steps, so that it may continue to hold its licence".
