In our tests of its performance in our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a fair job of picking up pet hair, but it struggled with very thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.
The Roomba 980 is still one of the best performing robots on our list despite the slight limitations. It's also less expensive than other top-of-the-line models. It's still packed with a variety of features that we'd expect to see in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that are found in other top models.
The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and get up and running immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and the battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do its job. It will return to its dock when it is running out of batteries or is full of trash. There are also indicators on top that indicate when the bin is empty, or when it requires recharging, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
