The Biggest Video Game Publisher Fails Of 2018

The landscape and squad-based combat of Ring of Elysium reminds us all too much of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. One might wonder why they would play Ring of Elysium when they could just as easily play PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Well, the former allows players to swim underwater past coral reefs and aquatic structures. Also, with a grappling hook and other cool features, the gameplay of Ring of Elysium does more than enough to distinguish its

GTA Online: Motor War s is a Grand Theft Auto Online Adversary Mode. It comprises 2-4 teams in a 28 player battle. It is a Last Team Standing match where players start by jumping out of a Cargobob and parachuting to the battlefield. Unquestionably, this game mode is heavily inspired by PlayerUnknown's Battlegrou

EA needed to have a good year after the savage mauling it received at the hands of fans in 2017. Games such as Star Wars: Battlefront II had been at the front of the video game loot boxes debate, which saw publishers such as EA come under fire for bad business models and potentially even using mechanics akin to gambling in their games. In the end, EA promised to do better with its future releases, and as such would come under a lot of scrut

Warner Bros. Interactive was perhaps feeling a little relieved that EA caught the most flack for loot boxes in 2017. After all, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War was also rife with loot boxes and subpar microtransactions, and although the game certainly was criticized for it, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was the title that represented the business model in the eyes of m

After the mod transitioned to ARMA 3 and took-off in earnest, Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) took notice and started development of a battle royale mode for their then upcoming game "Just Survive" (formerly "H1Z1"). In relatively short order, the developer invited Greene to their studio to ask if they could use his mode in the game. Greene agreed and they wound up bringing him onboard the project as a consultant. Just Survive’s battle royale mode would come to be known as "H1Z1: King of the Kill" and helped popularize the fledgling game genre even further.

Fortnite might have flashier loot, but looting in PUBG is more complicated. Players encounter a wide variety of loot that they can use to customize their weapons however they wish. So, if they feel they need faster aiming or better recoil, they can easily get this with the right l

Beginning October 1st and Neon giant running into early 2020, players of the mobile version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will have a chance to traverse the battlefield as familiar heroes from The Walking Dead , or a certain iconic villain. In a May 2017 interview with PCGamesN , Brendan Greene, the man behind the "PlayerUnknown" handle, discussed his initial inspiration for the mod. "I’d seen what Survivor GameZ did with DayZ," Greene said. "[…] It was a great event but I couldn’t play in it because I wasn’t a streamer. I thought: ‘Well, I want to do this. I want to play this’. I had a DayZ mod server that I had scripted lots of stuff into and decided I wanted to make a mod. I just thought, ‘Right, let’s try and make a battle royale mod’, and the genre was born." In its initial form, PlayerUnknown’s Battle Royale pitted 25 players against one another in a shared starting area with a cornucopia of gear lying before them. Once the countdown reached zero, the race for life and loot was on! Fun fact: one of the most iconic mechanics of the mod and its successors, the constantly shrinking circle, arose due to Greene’s skill-level as a programmer. "The ever decreasing circle – I couldn’t program squares like it is in the Battle Royale movie," Greene told Rock, Paper, Shotgun in a July 2017 interview . "The code for doing squares that shrink, I just couldn’t do it because I wasn’t a very good coder, right? So I [changed] it to an ever-decreasing circle that sort of moved around inside itself, because that’s how I could do it."

Despite being in early-access, PUBG is already an overwhelming success. It regularly dethrones League of Legends as the most streamed game on Twitch. It will be seeing a console release on the Xbox One by year’s end, and it seems to have cemented the battle royale arena as a fully-fledged genre in gaming. Major studios are already taking notice, with games like Grand Theft Auto Online and Fortnite adding battle royale game modes of their own. From starting as a mod-of-a-mod to serving as the basis for several major games, the journey this genre has undertaken thus far is already quite incredible. This is really just the beginning though! Who else out there is looking forward to seeing where these games go next?

The weapons in Fortnite are designed to look and feel playful. However, the ones in PUBG are realistic in both looks and feel. When the player shoots a gun in PUBG , they have to take into account the gun-specific recoil and how much they should adjust their gun after taking each shot. Since missing a shot might alert an opponent and make them hide or flee, one has to make each shot count. Reloading speed is also a factor that depends on the type of gun one
